COURSE DESCRIPTION

Avalanches are a significant hazard for winter hill walkers in Scotland.  This course will give you the skills to plan and carry out a safe journey in avalanche terrain.  Our experienced instructors will share their years of experience in a safe and enjoyable manor, giving you the skills and confidence to enjoy winter hill walking safely.  

WHO IS IT FOR?

To get the most from this course, you should have at least 5 days of winter walking experience that involved using an ice axe and crampons.  Skiers are also welcome but the course will be taught on foot.

  • Understand what causes avalanches

  • Learn how to avoid then 

  • Train to rescue an avalanche casualty

  • 1:6 maximum ratio

  • Understanding how avalanches occur

  • Interpreting avalanche forecasts

  • Route planning to avoid avalanches

  • On the hill snowpack and weather observations

  • Navigation strategies to travel safely in the mountains

  • Tools to aid your decision making process

  • Use of a Transceiver, Shovel and Probe
